How Many Grafts Do I Need? A Surgeon’s Guide

Why donor quality, hair calibre, scalp contrast, and realistic design matter more than internet averages.

How Many Grafts Do I Need? A Surgeon’s Guide

The internet loves round numbers

Patients regularly ask for a fixed number because online content suggests one can diagnose a transplant from a single mirror photo. Real planning is slower. The same visual problem can require very different graft counts depending on hair thickness, colour contrast, curl, and how much native hair still exists.

Hair calibre changes everything

Thicker hair casts more shadow and can create the impression of density with fewer grafts. Fine hair often needs a more strategic design to look balanced. That is why copying someone else’s graft count is rarely helpful.

Donor safety is the hidden half of the equation

A good clinic is not trying to maximise extraction in a single sitting. It is trying to solve your visible concern while protecting donor quality for future years. The number you need is therefore limited by what should responsibly be taken, not just by what could be taken today.

What a meaningful estimate sounds like

A trustworthy estimate is rarely a single heroic number. It is usually a range, linked to design priorities and donor reality, with an explanation of where density will be concentrated and why.
